KURZ stamping foils: Recyclable, environmentally-friendly and sustainable

Stamping foils have undergone rigorous evaluations to ensure their compliance with environmental regulations. KURZ, a renowned provider of stamping foils, prioritises sustainability and has taken significant steps to minimise environmental impact throughout their production processes.

Stamping foils for labels and packaging from KURZ adhere to environmental requirements

Raw materials and regulations

KURZ stamping foils are free from hazardous substances, complying with the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (11/2010) and REACH regulations. They are classified as articles (1907/2006/EG) and are not subject to registration. The company does not utilise volatile, ozone-depleting halogenated hydrocarbons, cadmium, lead, mercury or hexavalent chromium in their production process.

Reclassification of Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide, when in powder form with at least 1% particles of aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm, has been classified as a suspect carcinogen (category 2) according to the 14th adaptation of the CLP Regulation. However, this classification does not apply to articles such as wallpaper, paper or foil products containing titanium dioxide. As a result, KURZ foil products do not require additional labelling in accordance with EUH212.

Sustainability and stamping foils by Kurz

Recyclability of packaging finished with KURZ thin-film technology

KURZ recognises the importance of recyclability and encourages the use of packaging materials suitable for recycling. Stamping foil does not interfere with the recycling process as long as it does not affect the sortability of the packaging. Independent institutes can test the recyclability of packaging, providing valuable insights for product development and reworking.

Ecological sustainability

KURZ has a long-standing commitment to sustainability and has integrated environmental responsibility into its daily operations. The company emphasises resource conservation, energy efficiency and the limitation of hazardous substances and emissions. CO₂ emissions have been targeted for reduction, with ambitious goals set for the next five years across all sites.

Sustainable handling of resources

KURZ employs PET foils as carriers for decorative coatings, focusing on material strength optimisation. Initiatives are underway to explore the use of renewable raw materials and 100% PET recycling material for foil manufacture. Foil scraps and products recycled from PET foils or PET bottles are utilised in the production of new carrier foil, further promoting material recycling and resource preservation.

Manufacturing processes

KURZ follows best practices to ensure sustainable manufacturing. The company’s solvent-based lacquer systems allow for drying processes with minimal energy input. The solvents used are partially regenerated or sourced from organic materials. Regenerative exhaust-air cleaning plants contribute to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources are prioritised for electrical energy supply.

The four elements of sustainability:

KURZ emphasises sustainability across various aspects:

  1. End product: KURZ aims for problem-free recycling, eliminates hazardous materials and offers environmentally-friendly high-gloss metal effects without aluminium foil.
  2. Application process: The dry and emission-free stamping process requires minimal energy input, resulting in low CO₂ emissions.
  3. Manufacturing process: Waste water is not generated during the coating process and exhaust air evacuation with energy return is implemented globally.
  4. Production waste: PET foil waste is recycled and efforts are made to reduce waste through optimisation measures.

Four elements of sustainability and how Kurz stamping foils comply

Stamping foil recycling

KURZ actively supports energy recycling of stamping-foil waste, which has a high fuel value. By utilising polyester substrate waste as fuel surrogates, fossil energy carriers are sustainably replaced. KURZ encourages customers to also recycle stamping-foil waste and ensures that its waste meets strict limit values for fuel surrogate plants.

Commitment to emissions reduction

KURZ consistently surpasses the requirements of the Federal Immission Control Act, achieving emission levels up to 85% below mandated values. Ongoing optimisation of all process steps contributes to the company’s commitment to minimising environmental impact.

KURZ stamping foils are recyclable, environmentally-friendly and sustainable. Through its dedication to compliance with regulations, sustainable practices and waste reduction, KURZ is actively contributing to a greener future for the printing and packaging industries.
