Making cold transfer more efficient and sustainable

LEONHARD KURZ has developed KPS Slim Patent Pending cold transfer technology for decorating substrates with a high gloss finish that provides excellent coverage and edge definition, as well as a wide range of design options from delicate to large scale.

At the beginning of 2021, Leonhard Kurz introduced KPS SX+, a cold transfer formulation that offers an attractive, sustainable and efficient product finishing. The thin-film specialist has now further advanced the finishing of recycled, difficult to decorate and thin substrate materials with KPS Slim Patent Pending.

‘Guided by the idea of sustainability, we wanted to retain the excellent properties of KPS SX+ and at the same time save resources by halving the thickness of the PET carrier from 12μm to 6μm,’ explains Norbert Hell, global business development manager: Cold Transfer.

‘With KPS Slim Patent Pending, we use significantly thinner carrier material than with conventional products and, thanks to the lower weight, are also able to reduce CO2 consumption,’ adds Dr Ulrike Plaia, international product manager: Cold Transfer.

Ulrike points out that the patent pending formulation also boasts outstanding application properties and high processing efficiency. For example, the adhesive consumption of KPS Slim Patent Pending is typically lower than that of conventional cold transfer products. In addition, Kurz has further increased the cost-effectiveness for customers as more running metres fit on one roll, which reduces the weight and number of roll changes required. Ultimately, this results in a reduction in downtimes and set-up times.

South African market representative Phumzile Dlamini, foils product & marketing manager at Synchron, reports that KPS Slim Patent Pending has been successfully introduced to the local market. ‘This product is fast becoming the preferred cold transfer option thanks to an ongoing educational process between Synchron, printers/converters and brand owners. It allows printers/converters to ensure that they are sustainably contributing to the environment using this process instead of metallised board and paper,’ she enthuses. ‘Collectively, we are also finding new embellishment opportunities in the sheet-fed offset printing market every time we introduce and trial the KPS Slim Patent Pending.’
